I love Fashion Week. Wherever they are held. Berlin Fashion Week A/W 2016 starts today!
Up until last year, I could only cover them via the Internet. To me, it looked incredibly exciting. Many of the people in pictures looked to be having a blast. Very much the way a family takes pictures of a big family event. A busy family event! That was until last September…
I moved to New York at the beginning of September. And during all the craziness, I completely forgot about Fashion Week! Yes, I know, I should have some kind of fashion-related credentials revoked for a season. How dare I forget! But hey, I didn’t even have an apartment when I came out to New York. So yes, I had other things on my mind….
But when I was getting the basics settled, I don’t remember how, but saw that Fashion Week was going to start in a day or two! I certainly remember being exited as my work schedule allowed me to attend certain shows. That is to say, see who is coming and going from the shows as I certainly don’t have the credentials to get in. Yet.
So I thought I’d do some street fashion photography before and after the shows. Loved it! And there were quite a few others who were thinking the same thing. But the funny thing is, people always think of me as a pro. Even long before I decided to be a fashion photographer. I wear a decent looking camera and boom, people think I’m a pro and I get all sorts of cooperation. But regardless, I handle myself in a professional matter and unless it’s obvious they want their picture taken, always ask if I may do so. People really appreciate that.
I attended two days worth of shows and thought it was fantastic! You can see my coverage here. There were some amazingly styled people and most really got into the action. I think the one thing that put a damper on the photography were the amateurs who didn’t have real manners. It’s one thing to take someone’s picture. But it’s another when you start directing someone and they don’t want to stop in order not to be rude and create a reputation. But then again, it makes me look more professional. I just hope the GWC (Guy With Camera) doesn’t get in the way this year.
I look forward to seeing the imagery from all the shows and attending New York’s next month. Keep an eye on my Instagram at @RGomezPhotos or my website for my coverage of New York Fashion Week. I hope to see some of the new colleagues and friends I met at the last show.
Have fun everyone!
